The Early Childhood Education Benefits That Make School Readiness Easier

Dropping your child off at a child care center for the first time can bring up a wave of emotions. As parents, we wonder: Will they cry? Will they make friends? Are they actually learning what they need to know before kindergarten?

If you’ve felt hesitant about starting child care, you are far from alone. To help navigate these big questions, our Executive Director, Ms. Rochelle, and Education Director, Ms. Gaelle, sat down with Racquel Stephenson—a parent at our Academic Explorers of Merrick location and a veteran educator with 14 years of classroom experience.

As an educational advocate who has seen the full gamut of student development, Racquel shared incredible insights on how high-quality early childhood education builds true school readiness, shapes a child’s confidence, and eases parental anxiety.

Here are the key takeaways from her journey that every parent should consider when preparing a child for the future.

1. Understanding the Early Childhood Education Benefits

In the past, kindergarten was a time for learning basic shapes, numbers, and how to share. Today, the academic benchmarks are significantly higher.

"The expectation now is that they know everything essentially when they walk in," Racquel noted.

For children to thrive rather than feel overwhelmed, early exposure to structured learning gives them a distinct advantage. Early childhood education benefits children by introducing concepts like science, language, and foundational math in an interactive environment. For instance, Racquel shared that her four-year-old son, Harrison, can already count to 25 in Spanish and loves identifying the planets in the solar system—all because of his daily activities at Academic Explorers.

2. School Readiness is About Routine, Not Just Academics

True school readiness isn't just about what a child can recite from a flashcard; it’s about their social and emotional confidence.

When children start school early, they learn the vital "soft skills" of a classroom environment:

  • Navigating Routines: Learning that there is a time for circle time, a time for center play, and a time for cleanup.

  • Socialization: Learning how to stand in a line, share materials, and build relationships with peers outside of immediate family members.

  • Confidence Over Shyness: For children who are naturally shy, knowing the classroom routines and realizing "Oh, I already know how to do this!" prevents them from shutting down when tasks get challenging.

3. Energy, Safety, and the "Right Fit"

When touring child care centers, parents often look at the size of the building or the flashiness of the toys. But as an educator and a mom, Racquel looked for something much deeper: emotional safety.

"We toured so many schools. We went to certain places and he would not even get out of our laps... One of the biggest things that stuck out for me [at Academic Explorers] is that he held Ms. Rochelle’s hand and walked with her. He gave her a hug on the first walk-in. The fact that he felt so comfortable... that was the selling point right there."

A great child care program shouldn't feel like a rigid corporate business; it should feel like an extension of your own family. Look for a center where the staff greets your child by name at the door, keeps you connected with photos throughout the day, and fosters an open-door policy for parents.

4. How to Overcome Child Care Hesitation

If you are nervous about sending your child to school, Racquel’s advice is simple: Don't do it until you are ready, but don't be afraid to take a small step.

Trusting other people to care for your child for hours at a time requires a conscious release. If a full-week schedule feels too intimidating at first, look for a program that offers flexibility. Easing your child into a routine with a 2-day or 3-day schedule, or opting for a half-day program, is an excellent way to warm up both you and your little one. Before you know it, your child will be telling you they are ready for more!
