Transportation Operator Job Description

 

Position Summary

The Transportation Operator is responsible for transporting children in our 7-seater minivan to and from school and extracurricular events following a scheduled route while ensuring passenger safety and observing safety and traffic rules while on the road.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Transport children and other passengers to and from our child care centers, children’s homes, elementary schools, field trip destinations, and other assigned locations.

  • Obey traffic laws to ensure students arrive at their destination safely.

  • Ensure the supervision of children to maintain the overall health, safety, and well-being of each child in care.

  • Ensure the safety of all children entering and exiting the vehicle.

  • Assist children with getting on and off the vehicle.

  • Engage with children as they enter and exit the vehicle.

  • Discuss assigned duties with Transportation Support staff.

  • Maintains a well-organized, clean, sanitary, safe, and mechanically-sound vehicle.

  • Communicate to supervisor all vehicle defects and irregular transportation incidents.

  • Perform daily record keeping such as ensuring completion of sign in/out sheets.

  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings, trainings, center activities, and staff development.

  • Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.

  • Enforce and abide by all company policies, regulations, administration instructions, and rules governing students.

  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs.

  • Monitors child behavior and provides reports of misconduct to supervisor.

  • Complete incident reports to notify children’s families of incidents, injuries, or illnesses that occur at the center.

  • Shops for essential items from local stores when assigned to do so by supervisor.

  • Provides transportation to staff members for training, special events, and to get to and from each center location as assigned.

  • Assists with the transportation of materials to and from special events and set up.

  • Undergo ongoing training as assigned or approved by administration and/or the Center Director.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25-30 pound children and objects.

  • Must be able to walk, squat/kneel, sit on floor, see, hear, speak with children to ensure children’s health and safety.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or higher education preferred.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must have a currently valid NYS Driver License (no CDL required).

  • Must have a clean driving record.

  • Minimum one year of child care experience preferred.

  • Must have effective, appropriate, and strong communication skills (orally and written).

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English, bilingual is a plus.

 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and understand basic English. This position is very active and requires sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. The employee must be able to see and hear children at all times for the safety of children and co-workers.

Pay rate: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
